rosemaryI first came across rosemary as a main ingredient in an organic strengthening and thickening shampoo I used quite some time ago.

Not that I was dealing with a hair loss problem at the time but I just wanted to add some volume to my thin hair.

That is how I first heard about Rosemary benefits in hair care and started digging more into it.

What Is Rosemary?

Rosemary is a herb of Mediterranean origin with a sweet, fresh and herbaceous scent which feels stimulating and refreshing. If you live in a Mediterranean country, there is no way you would not have heard about it or even used it in cooking.

Still, rosemary has a large number of health uses as well, which include aching muscles, dull skin, hair care and even dandruff.

It has also been used for centuries in home remedies for skin and hair since it contains many vitamins such as A, B2, B6 and C, calcium, iron, magnesium and other antioxidants.

Today, you can benefit from rosemary essential oil by adding it to your hair care homemade recipes or look for rosemary as an ingredient contained in the hair care products you want to buy. You can also prepare rosemary hair recipes by boiling the leaves of the rosemary plant.

Rosemary Benefits for Hair

There are various benefits when using rosemary essential oil in your hair. It is well known for stimulating hair roots and slowing down the process of hair loss when there is a moderate or excessive hair fall due to causes such as stress or nerves in adults and teenagers, poor eating habits, prolonged exposure to screens TV and computers (radiation), or even because of the season’s change and women’s sudden hormonal change after childbirth.

How Can Rosemary Help your Hair?

It is even used like a remedy for slowing down the graying of the hair and it is good for beards, too. It is said to be beneficial for dry and flaking scalps since it is nourishing but it can also help with dandruff.

In my case, the rosemary shampoo I used helped me control the oiliness of my scalp and therefore bring its oil production into a balance.

This gave an extra boost to my hair and prevented my scalp from loosing hair due to the imbalance of my scalp’s oil production. The balancing of the oil production and the boosting of the hair follicles can be useful when it comes to dealing with dandruff as well.

In general, even if you don’t suffer from a hair loss or a dandruff problem, rosemary oil can help you have stronger, healthier, thicker and more shinny hair naturally.

How To Choose Hair Products With Rosemary

If you are not into home remedies for hair but you like to try hair care products containing rosemary, then you have to look carefully for them. To enjoy the full benefits of a rosemary hair product, you should check that rosemary is either the main or at the top of the list of ingredients.

Personally, I prefer natural and organic products that are free from irritating ingredients which my scalp is very sensitive to, causing dryness and even severe irritation. So, I avoid those harmful foaming agents like SLS and other components that can disturb my scalp’s natural health.

Also, if you are buying online, you can also check whether the product is followed by a manufacturer guarantee so that your purchase is free of risk.

Natural Hair Treatment With Rosemary

Before using any essential oil on your skin and hair, it is always better to know the exact amount of oil you should use in a home treatment by consulting an expert or even taking all the necessary information from a reliable source if you are not completely sure about it.

In case of pregnancy, always consult your doctor before you try out any natural recipe containing essential oils.

Essential oils should be used carefully because they can be irritating when applied undiluted on the skin or even hair, so a skin patch test is always recommended.

Here, we will provide you with a natural homemade treatment that uses rosemary leaves and not rosemary essential oil, so it is completely safe apart from the case that you may have an allergic reaction to the rosemary plant.

So, let’s have a look at the details of the recipe.

Preparation

rosemary leafBoil about half a liter of water in a pot and once it starts boiling, turn off the heat. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of rosemary leaf into the water and cover the pot for 10 to 15 minutes.

Let the water cool up and pour it into a glass container or a glass spray bottle. Keep it in the fridge for few days and use it by spraying it on your hair after you shower.

Since the product is free of preservatives, you will only be able to use it for few days and then prepare a fresh batch.

How To Use It

After each shower, pour or spray (depending on the container) the rosemary water in the scalp and very gently give a massage to it for about two minutes. To get a better effect, you can bow down to stimulate the blood flow.

After you have sprayed the water, you can comb or brush your hair gently for few minutes and then dry it, but it is preferable to let it dry naturally when you follow this treatment. You can repeat the process for a few weeks each time you wash your hair.
